An Atlantic County resident undergoing testing for West Nile is likely the first person in New Jersey to contract the mosquito-borne illness in 2025.
Additional information about the resident wasn’t disclosed by the state Department of Health, which is conducting testing to positively confirm the illness. The state learned about the probable case during the week of July 20, according to its latest vector-surveillance report .
The news comes a little over a week after the state announced it’s investigating the first possible case of locally-acquired malaria in New Jersey since 1991.
While it’s not unusual to see West Nile in New Jersey, cases have gone up in recent years.
The state had 41 human cases and eight deaths last year, way above average.
