YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — A powerful thunderstorm rolled through Yuma County on Monday, knocking down power lines, flooding streets and forcing schools to close.
Arizona Public Service said eight power poles were knocked down in Yuma. About 5,000 customers lost electricity at the height of the storm. Crews were still working Tuesday to restore service. Several schools also canceled classes or sent students home after the storm damaged pipes and air conditioning units.
“It was weird because it was sunny, then it was black, and out of nowhere the storm started,” said Valeria, a Yuma resident.
Just west of the county, flash floods in Imperial County, California , stranded dozens of drivers along Highway 86, including a Yuma man.
The floodwaters overturned semi trucks and left at least 20
