ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that New Mexico is one of three states at risk of losing commercial truck safety funding if it fails to enforce English language proficiency requirements for truckers.
This decision stems from a deadly crash in Florida involving Harjinder Singh, an Indian national in the U.S. illegally, who was accused of killing three people while making an illegal U-turn in a semi-truck.
Singh had been pulled over in New Mexico by state police over a month before the crash, but federal officials claim no English proficiency test was conducted.
New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler stated, "following a thorough review of the traffic stop by our officer, it was apparent the officer and driver were able to successfully communicat
