Memorial University political scientist Kelly Blidook says an election could be called shortly. (Submitted by Kelly Blidook)

A provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador must be called by September 16 if Premier John Hogan wants to give candidates the shortest amount of time — 28 days — on the campaign trail.

Back-to-back government announcements indicate the writ could drop before then, according to Memorial University political scientist Kelly Blidook.

"They want to get as many things out there, as many things as they possibly can in advance of campaigning, which is essentially just a version of campaigning," Blidook told CBC News.
