BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - History on the high banks on this day in 1998.

Car racing has long been the domain of men, but every once in a while, a woman conquers the track.

On August 27, 1998, Tracie Bellerose became the first woman to win a late model stock car race at Thunder Road in Barre.

“If anyone has a dream out there - follow it - because my dream just came true,” she said in an interview with Channel 3.

This win was no fluke.

Two years later, the Gorham, New Hampshire driver won the season title, becoming the first ever queen of the road, as well as the first woman to ever win a track championship in a top stock car division.
