MAYVILLE – Fans gathered at the Mayville High School football stadium like it was a Friday night, ready to watch football.

Only instead it was Tuesday, and there was a volleyball court on the field.

“Last night I got a little emotional just because we had practice on the court, and we’ve worked so hard to put this in play. And up until last night, it was something that was supposed to work; on paper it worked, but we had proof of concept last night,” Mayville volleyball coach Alan Capps said. “It was during golden hour, and we had this beautiful night.”

Mayville hosted the first ever high school outdoor sanctioned volleyball match in the state of Wisconsin. The event was called the “Battle of the Marsh: The Ultimate Showdown” and featured Mayville, Waupun and Horicon.
