Suffolk County Sheriff Steven Tompkins, who was charged in an extortion case involving his alleged stock dealings with a Boston-based cannabis company, has agreed to "step away" from his position, officials said Wednesday.

Tompkins, 67, of Boston, was arrested on Aug. 8 in the Southern District of Florida, United States Attorney Leah Foley's office announced. He was indicted on two counts of extortion under color of official right. Latest Forecast
