CHARLESTON — City officials are creating special rules for the Medical University of South Carolina , making it easier for the hospital to redevelop properties it owns downtown.

Nearly 62 acres across 61 parcels, an area roughly the size of neighboring Radcliffborough or Harleston Village, would be rezoned under the proposed Medical District Overlay Zone.

The proposal essentially allows MUSC to construct newer, faster, denser, and taller buildings with less parking , while also luring businesses that feed, house and caffeinate the medical campus’ patients, their families and a 24/7 workforce.
