BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - The Virginia Tech Police Department is warning students and community members about ongoing scams happening around them as the university starts classes.
The scams that criminals are resorting to range from fake football ticket sales, sextortion, bogus research positions and, grifts involving emails pretending to be a victim’s family member or law enforcement.
Football Ticket Scam
Scammers will use social media pretending to be from an alumni group promising to sell tickets to Hokies football games. Payment is usually through an application such as Venmo, CashApp or Zelle.
