A man who drowned in the River Tay while swimming with pals has been named as an asylum seeker who recently moved to Scotland three months ago. ‌

Mohammad Akrami was swimming in the Moncreiffe Island area when he and his two pals got into difficulty at around 7.45pm on Thursday, August 14. ‌

Emergency crews were called to the banks of the river to search for the missing Perth man. ‌

Local hero Stewart Miller also raced out on his jet ski to try and help the men but Mohammad was tragically swept away down the river.

The 27-year-old's body was tragically pulled from the water at around 5.30pm the following day.

‌It's understood the refugee had arrived in Scotland by small boat just months ago "in search for a better life".
