In the Northeastern United States, Amtrak is being dealt some major blows by the Republican Party.
First, Amtrak stands to lose millions of dollars in revenue unless Republicans in the Pennsylvania State Senate agree to a funding deal for SEPTA, Philadelphia's mass transit system — as SEPTA pays millions to Amtrak to rent train tracks that it owns. SEPTA is planning to slash services by up to 45 percent if funding from the Pennsylvania State Legislature is not secured, and SEPTA's problems are so bad for Amtrak that may eliminate some lines that run through the Philadelphia Area.
Meanwhile, a few hours away in Washington, D.C., Amtrak is facing another hardship: Transportation Security Sean Dunny announced, on Wednesday, August 27, that the agency he heads under the Trump Administration is taking control of Union Station away from Amtrak.

Duffy, in his announcement, said, "By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost…. He wants Union Station to be beautiful again. He wants transit to be safe again. And he wants our nation’s capital to be great again. And today is part of that."
Duffy's announcement is generating plenty of discussion on X, formerly Twitter.
Public relations specialist Bob Pickard took a biting jab at the Trump Administration, posting an old black-and-white photo of fascist Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, a.k.a. Il Duce, and "Is this so that 'the trains will run on time,' so to speak?"
Mussolini's defenders, during the 1930s, famously said that he deserved credit for making Italy's trains run on time.

Liberal YouTuber Vince Wilson commented, "Trump is continuing to expand control. Where are all those small government Republicans? Oh wait they no longer exist."
Sterling Media Promotions posted, "All the small government Republicans have jumped shipped from the GOP because the GOP has become the party of big controlling Christian run Christofascist Government."
X user Jeff Storobinsky remarked, "What, it is not to be renamed 'Trump Station'?"
Another X user, Luis Hernández, wrote, "So, now the White House owns private businesses, runs trains stations, uses the national guard as municipal sanitation… What is next?"
Business consultant DeSota Wilson tweeted, "Trump is strengthening the fortress in D.C. to further protect his authoritarian rule... this strategy could effectively suppress the voices and actions of Americans who strive to uphold our democratic republic and its principles."
X user Sally Jesset tweeted, "This is very disappointing.. Thousands of non US citizens like myself will not be travelling to the US to watch the FIFA World Cup next year. It would ruin our enjoyment under martial law conditions."
