A burned-out RV lies at the bottom of a steep Peachland hillside after it toppled down an unusually narrow road and sparked a forest fire alongside Highway 97.

Residents of 58 homes were evacuated about 1 a.m. Wednesday but town and provincial firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in just a few hours.

“The grass on the hillside there is all very dry, and the fire must have been advancing very quickly toward the homes,” Don Wilson, a retired Peachland fire chief who lives nearby, said Wednesday morning.

“They had lots of equipment there and I heard on my scanner they asked for mutual aid from other departments, so they were obviously stressed out about what was happening,” But they did a good job stopping the fire before it really got away.”
