APOPKA, Fla. – A new mural in downtown Apopka is stirring controversy after critics pointed out its similarities to another artist’s work.

The mural, painted on the side of the Domino’s Pizza on East Main Street, was unveiled last week.

Soon after, an Iowa artist recognized that the design resembled her own mural, which she painted in 2017.

The Apopka artist behind the piece said he worked from inspiration provided by the city, not a blank canvas.

As backlash grew online, Apopka’s Main Street Program issued a public apology to the Iowa artist and the community.

The group also pledged to compensate her and give her proper credit.
