An animal cruelty investigation is underway in Virginia after a dog was found abandoned and near death outside a Manassas animal clinic, authorities said.
On Monday, Aug. 25, at 10:49 a.m., Animal Control responded to the Battlefield Animal Clinic on Sudley Road after staff discovered a severely emaciated dog left in a cage at the side of the building, according to Prince William County Police.
The dog, described as an adult tan-and-white pit bull/husky mix, was in poor health, officials said. Clinic staff provided immediate care until Animal Control arrived.
From there, the dog was taken to the Prince William County Animal Services Center, where it had to be humanely euthanized "due to its suffering and poor quality of life.”
The remains were submitted for necropsy and further examination, officials noted.
Surveillance video showed a light-colored sedan, possibly a Lexus with Maryland tags, pull into an adjacent parking lot at approximately 4:18 a.m. that morning. Police said the driver was then seen removing the cage and abandoning the dog before leaving.
The suspect was described as a man of unknown age or race, wearing a baseball hat, white tank top, and a dark-colored shirt draped on his shoulders.
The case remains under investigation.
