PARMA, Ohio -- Earlier this year, Parma Service Director Tony Vannello talked about the possibility of adding a third salt dome in the city.
However, increased costs, along with Parma recently receiving a $75,000 Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Sodium Chloride Reduction Grant, finds the city pivoting on those plans.
Instead of building new, the city is now planning to repair its main 5,500-ton salt dome, located at the Chevrolet Boulevard service garage,
“We were looking at creating possibly some redundancy with this grant, to create a third dome, but we shifted gears because of the cost,” Vannello said.
“The service garage dome had been repaired a number of times over the years, but a complete rebuild for another dome was north of $300,000.
“That was just too much money.”
