PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- David Caldwell has emerged as the first candidate to formally announce his campaign for a soon-to-be vacant City Council seat on Providence's East Side.

Caldwell announced in a news release on Wednesday afternoon that he will run as a Democrat for the Ward 2 seat on the council, which consists of the Blackstone, College Hill and Wayland neighborhoods.

The seat is being vacated next month when Councilwoman Helen Anthony is set to formally resign. Anthony announced at the beginning of the month she was stepping down from her role to "more fully focus" on her health after she was seriously injured in an ATV accident in June 2023 while on a trip to California.
