ORANGE, Texas — An elderly woman escaped unharmed Wednesday after a fire broke out in her Orange home while she was cooking.

Fire crews responded to the 2300 block of Rio Grande Place after receiving a report of a structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a single-story home, according to Orange fire personnel on scene.

The 90-year-old homeowner told officials she had been frying fish and stepped into her bedroom. When she returned, the kitchen was on fire.

Firefighters quickly attacked the flames and were able to contain the fire to the kitchen and attic. The woman was able to get out safely and refused medical treatment, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the City of Orange fire marshal.
