WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Congressman Seth Magaziner has reintroduced legislation to make wage theft a felony throughout the country.
His bill, the Don't Stand for Taking Employed American's Livings (Don't STEAL) Act, aims to take on "bad actors" who don't properly compensate their employees, don't pay overtime, and steal tips, Magaziner's office said.
He previously introduced the legislation last year, but it never made it to the House floor for a vote.
"Every day, working people across the country are cheated out of the wages they've earned," Magaziner said Wednesday. "It's outrageous that someone can be jailed for stealing a television, but not for stealing money from a worker’s pocket."
