The principal of Annunciation School delivered an emotional message to parents, students and his staff following a deadly mass shooting that took place as many had gathered for a back-to-school Mass at the school's church Wednesday.
"To any of our students and families and staff watching right now. I love you. You're so brave. And I'm so sorry this happened to us today," Matthew DeBoer began his remarks during a press conference hours after the shooting took place.
He went on to describe how teachers who were with their students in the church Wednesday morning were "heroes."
"Children were ducked down. Adults were protecting children. Older children were protecting younger children. And as we heard earlier, it could have been significantly worse without their heroic action," he said.
