Imprisoned cartel kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada said this week that the Sinaloa cartel had promoted corruption in Mexico by paying off “police, military commanders and politicians.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said investigators found no evidence that sitting politicians or military commanders were receiving payments from the cartel.

Zambada founded the Sinaloa cartel with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who is also imprisoned in the U.S.
