JERSEY CITY, N.J. (PIX11) -- It's been two years to the day since Jersey City Police shot and killed 52-year-old Andrew Washington while he was in the midst of a mental health crisis.
On Wednesday, his family gathered to mark the anniversary of his death and connect community members with local mental health resources.
The day of Aug. 27, 2023, remains as fresh as ever in the minds of Washington's family members.
"Just that moment just stays with me every day," said Denise Ervin-Davis, Washington's aunt.
"We heard the shots, but I never thought that he was dead," recalls Toni Ervin, Washington's aunt.
