HOUSTON, Texas -- Thailand, a male Asian elephant, is one of the Houston Zoo's oldest residents. This summer, he celebrated a milestone birthday - he turned 60 years old!
"He's a very significant part of our herd and has an amazing legacy here at the Houston Zoo," Elephant keeper Kendra Roetman said.
Thailand has fathered at least 15 calves. According to the Houston Zoo, he is one of the most prolific breeding male Asian elephants.
August is Asian Elephant Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the endangered species and highlight conservation efforts.
