PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A new state law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every Texas classroom is facing legal challenges, leaving some schools exempt from compliance while others prepare to follow the mandate.
A federal judge granted an injunction that exempts 11 districts from displaying the posters after parents and advocacy groups sued the state. Rachel Laser, president and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said the court’s decision underscores constitutional concerns.
“So that decision says that it is plainly unconstitutional for there to be a 10 Commandments required display in public schools,” Laser said.
