BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Dog adoptions have been temporarily suspended at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society due to a confirmed distemper exposure at Jefferson County Animal Care and Control.

According to a statement from GBHS, dogs in the shelter's care are being closely monitored, and steps are being taken to mitigate the risk of exposure. The Snow Drive Adoption Center was closed on Tuesday for deep cleaning. Cat adoptions were able to resume Wednesday.

If a pet adopted during this time frame is showing any of these symptoms, owners are asked to contact the GBH
