LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- The Student Restroom Privacy Act is headed to the Michigan House floor after a heated committee hearing Wednesday. The bill would require students to use the bathroom that matches their biological sex.

The vote on advancing the bill was along party lines, but both Democrats and Republicans made their voices heard on the legislation. Republicans say this is a commonsense proposal. Democrats say it could violate certain civil rights.

According to the language of the bill schools in Michigan would be required to ensure each student's privacy from individuals of the opposite biological sex when it comes to shared spaces like bathrooms and changing areas.
