WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Special prosecutor David Ethredge decided not to file charges against Kermit Acosta in the fatal shooting of Brad Jones in Lavaca on July 10, citing "stand your ground laws" as the reasoning, raising questions about those laws in Arkansas.

According to documents obtained from the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office, Jones approached Acosta at a home he was working on, demanding money Acosta owed Jones. Acosta exited the home's garage, passing Jones, and retrieved a gun from his truck. A few moments later, after witnesses said Jones threated to beat him up, Acosta shot and killed Jones.

The Jones family are now hiring lawyers from the Atwell Law Firm hoping to file a wrongful death suit after it was announced Acosta wouldn't be charged.
