LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Wednesday’s school shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is sparking conversations between parents and their children, a sensitive topic that may be challenging to discuss.

Child Psychologist Dr. Crystal Cederna shares tips on how to approach these difficult conversations, based on the age of your children.

For kids aged seven and under, she recommends leading with open-ended questions that are unassuming about what they know.

“Use simple sentences to explain what’s happening, like, ‘Someone did something that was hurtful for other people.’ Resist the urge to over-talk; let their questions guide the information that you give,” said Dr. Cederna.
