SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Republican state lawmaker wants to turn California into two separate states.

Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher (R-East Nicolaus) introduced legislation this week to get the process started – Assembly Joint Resolution 23. Throughout the state, he said Republicans feel unheard and under-represented, so he wants to split the state in two.

This is in response to Democrats’ efforts to redraw California’s Congressional maps in favor of Democrats. State Republicans have been vocal in their opposition to the plan over the last several weeks.

“Those politicians that are in power, they don't care about those people. And they don't care because they don't have to; the structure is set up that they'll get elected anyway and they'll have the power,” Gallagher sa
