SAN DIEGO, Ca. - A Navy veteran from Shreveport never thought she would ride the waves of the Pacific Ocean again after being diagnosed with PTSD and Multiple Sclerosis, but this week, she surfed for the first time at the 18th annual National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic in San Diego.

Peggy Elzie served in the Navy from 2005 to 2011 aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, deploying across the south Pacific where she suffered traumatic injuries.

Elzie is one of 150 veterans participating in the clinic. The five-day event is designed to help recently injured veterans though adaptive sports like surfing, cycling and kayaking.

"It's a lot harder than it looks, but it feels empowering. It feels like I can continue to thrive after doing something that I never thought I could do," said Elzie.
