SPARTANBURG, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Spartanburg City Manager gave a presentation responding to concerns about taking down the clock tower in Morgan Square that has a history dating back over a century.

The clock tower has stood in Morgan Square since the 1970s and has been a part of past government buildings since 1881. Some people said it is symbol of the city.

City Manager Chris Story gave a presentation recommending a new clock tower to be part of the city and county government building in development.

He argued South Carolina’s Heritage Act does not protect the clock tower as the law protects monuments and memorials connected to specific parts of history.

Story said they are looking at moving elements of the current clock, including historical markers, to inside the new building
