CHAPEL HILL — South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez will be UNC football's starting quarterback in Week 1 against TCU, head coach Bill Belichick announced during a press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Belichick was asked about Lopez's development during the fifth preseason press conference, which was held inside the Kenan Football Center. During that question, Belichick revealed that Lopez would get the starting nod. Lopez and the Tar Heels host the Horned Frogs on Monday, Sept, 1, in a primetime game (8 p.m., ESPN) at Kenan Stadium.
"Gio has made a ton of progress. We have evaluated things through training camp. As now, we get ready for TCU, he'll be our starting quarterback. So we'll give him a majority of the reps in practice and make sure we give him as much preparation as possible," B
