Daryl and Leslie Daugs live in a comfortable home on Bremerton's east side, with a view of the Olympics from the front-yard, a detached garage and a shady porch in back where they spend most of their summer evenings.

Twenty years ago the family nearly let it all go, due to a disaster that happened 2,600 miles away and affected people they had never met. Daryl Daugs had just seen up close the damage left by Hurricane Katrina, during a visit to New Orleans just three months after the epic storm made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005. Then he called his wife, the couple recalled during a recent interview.
