Members of the National Guard have been tasked with unexpected duties amid President Donald Trump’s escalating takeover of the nation’s capital.

A new Washington Post report detailed the various tasks being assigned to the National Guard troops who were deployed by Trump earlier this month to deter crime in Washington, D.C. While the troops were deployed to assist local law enforcement with crime, the report said their recent assignments included “beautification” tasks, including trash removal, landscaping and removing graffiti.

“I think it’s nice, as a D.C. resident,” one Guard member told the Post. “But there are different things we could be doing.”

Videos and photographs circulating on social media show National Guard troops picking up trash in the parks or spreading mulch.
