‘The Roses’ is a mismatch of British wit and American slapstick

“The Roses” is a remake of 1989’s “The War of the Roses” that plays like a battle of international comic sensibilities. On one hand, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman in a merry black comedy of British invective that keeps veering into genuine emotional pain. On the other hand, it’s a goofy American divorce farce set in sunny California with a supporting cast of sketch comedians.
