My jaw dropped when I saw her. Gone the lovely lilac corona that enveloped her almost year-round. Missing the juniper, boxwood and Texas sage that welcomed family and friends as they trod the cobbled stones.

Why was the custom-made mailbox, so quaint yet elegant, removed from the side of the building? And why did the bricks look like rubble when this proud, noble structure had withstood almost 80 years of gentle care?

We never thought we would feel sad and nostalgic about a place where not everything was merriment and contentment, but was a site where happiness did abound and where life-altering events and memories were stored.

We wonder if the new owners are curious about the former residents of the once-regal building, or was it simply a transaction: “here you go; take your money and
