DECORAH, Iowa (KCRG) - A Luther College professor partnered with students over the summer to identify unmarked graves in Winneshiek County.
The graves were located by students Evan McElroy, Benson Newhouse, and Rebecca Zheng, who worked alongside Professor of Anthropology Colin Betts on the project.
Students identified the grave sites using remote sensing technology.
“This summer we learned how to use remote sensing. I hadn’t had any experience with this equipment previously, nor the software involved in processing the data and how to analyze it, so it was a great opportunity,” Newhouse said.
The technology allowed students to find the graves without disturbing the sites, reflecting a larger movement in archaeology to use non-invasive methods when investigating sensitive and historical
