MARSHALL, Texas — The University Interscholastic League, which oversees high school athletics in Texas, said it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the death of a Marshall High School student-athlete who collapsed during cross country practice last week.
Estefani Cabrera, 15, suffered a medical emergency during practice on Aug. 18 and died the following day at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, according to school and medical officials.
“UIL is aware of the tragic passing of a student-athlete following a medical emergency at a cross country practice in Marshall ISD,” UIL spokesperson Julia Zachary said in a statement. “District officials have been in contact with UIL staff, and we offer them our support as we await additional information.
