Ford Motor Company is recalling 52,547 vehicles in Canada due to a brake fluid leak issue. The company also announced a recall of nearly 500,000 vehicles in the United States. The recalls were confirmed on Thursday.
The problem stems from a ruptured hose in the brake system, which can lead to fluid leaks. This may result in longer stopping distances, increasing the risk of a crash. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers may notice a change in brake pedal feel or travel. Additionally, a red brake fluid warning light may illuminate if the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir drops to a certain level.
A spokesperson for Ford stated, "Drivers may receive a warning through a change in brake pedal feel or travel and the illumination of a red brake fluid warning indicator light if the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir reaches a specified level."
Ford has reported no accidents or injuries related to this issue. The recall affects the Ford Edge SUV from model years 2015 to 2018 and the Lincoln MKX mid-size luxury vehicle from 2016 to 2018. The NHTSA estimates that about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles may have the defect.
Ford is currently working on a solution and will notify vehicle owners by mail once a remedy is available. Owners can take their vehicles to a local Ford or Lincoln dealer for free repairs.
