OTTAWA — Canada has appointed a new high commissioner to India, marking a significant step in the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced that Christopher Cooter will assume the role. This appointment comes 10 months after both nations expelled their top diplomats amid rising tensions.
Cooter brings extensive experience to the position, having served as a diplomat for 35 years. His previous postings include Israel and South Africa, and he also worked in New Delhi 25 years ago.
Relations between Canada and India have been strained since Canadian authorities accused the Indian government of involvement in the June 2023 assassination of a Sikh activist near Vancouver. This incident led to a diplomatic fallout, resulting in the expulsion of both countries' high commissioners.
However, there have been signs of thawing relations. In June, Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit held in Alberta. Following this, both countries agreed to restore their top diplomats, signaling a willingness to mend ties.
As of now, India’s High Commission in Ottawa has not responded to inquiries regarding the appointment of a new Indian high commissioner to Canada.
