Beck Layne sobbed as she walked along the colored sidewalks outside the Social Equity through Education (SEE) Alliance building, filled with artwork from artists like Layne, on August 27.

The strip of art is one of hundreds of sidewalk square art in Sarasota that is set to be removed following Senate Bill 1662 , signed by Gov Ron DeSantis in June. The bill directs the Florida Department of Transportation to ensure all traffic control devices meet the updated guidelines in the 2025 FDOT design manual .
