PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - This Friday, August 29, marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. We look back at one of the costliest and deadliest storms to strike the United States.

Hurricane Katrina was responsible for 1,392 fatalities and caused $125 billion in damage (Worth about $207 billion today)

Katrina first impacted southern Florida as a Category 1 hurricane, strengthened into a Category 5 storm over the Gulf, then weakened to a Category 3 before making landfall.

Katrina caused widespread flooding and destruction of infrastructure, as well as the displacement of over a million people .

Just two days after landfall, over 80% of New Orleans was flooded due to levee
