Just one day after reports came out that the Democratic Party is considering holding a rare national convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, President Donald Trump teased the idea of the Republican Party holding its own early national convention, telling his supporters to “stay tuned” regarding any announcements.
“We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and we are having a great time fixing all of the country-destroying mistakes made by the Biden administration, while watching the USA heal and prosper,” Trump wrote Thursday on his social media platform Truth Social.
“The results are incredible – at a record pace! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a national convention to the Republican Party just prior to the midterms. It has never been done before. Stay tuned!”
According to “people familiar with the discussions,” Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin has raised the idea this week of holding an early national convention to bolster Democrats’ election prospects for the upcoming midterm elections, Newsmax reported Wednesday.
The news of Democrats holding an early convention comes amid the party’s abysmal polling among voters, with the party’s net favorability plummeting this month to a near three-decade low. An early convention could spark some much-needed enthusiasm for the party’s base.
Trump and the GOP’s favorability has suffered as well, particularly in the wake of the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which itself has garnered only 32% approval among Americans. Trump’s own favorability stood at 38% as of Aug. 14.
Nevertheless, Trump insisted the GOP was set to “win big” in the upcoming midterms, claiming that the party was “doing really well.”
“Millions of people have joined us in our quest to Make America Great Again,” Trump wrote. “We won every aspect of the presidential election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to win big in the midterms.”
