SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A Sacramento resident lost her life savings in one day after falling victim to an email scam.
Rhane Thompson said it began with a message claiming she had spent $351 at Springfield Armory for a gun.
"I'm like, okay, this is just a mistake. I need to call and have PayPal straighten it out," said Thompson.
She called the number listed in the email, thinking it was PayPal, but now believes it was a scammer.
"He starts spinning this horrifying, frightening story that my name and my identifying information has been used to open 22 PayPal accounts," said Thompson.
They told her those accounts were linked to money laundering and illegal purchases.
Thompson told KCRA 3 she feared being arrested for something she didn’t do.
