AUBURN, Wash. — Over 100 small dogs were rescued from an Auburn home in what city officials call "one of the largest animal rescue efforts in Auburn's history.

The Auburn Police Department said the investigation began as a routine welfare check for a small group of dogs. After two separate operations over the course of a week, a total of 103 dogs were surrendered by the owner of the home.

The officer was initially told there were just five adult dogs and seven puppies, but discovered at least 50 before further investigation led to the discovery of the total amount.

The first rescue operation began at 3 p.m. on Aug. 20, with approximately 82 dogs being rescued by 3 a.m. the following the morning. A second operation took place on Aug. 26 to get the remaining dogs out of the home.
