Penn State football coach James Franklin said after practice Wednesday night that Ethan Grunkemeyer will begin the season as the No. 2 quarterback behind Drew Allar.
Franklin emphasized that the decision to choose Grunkemeyer over Jaxon Smolik is only for Saturday’s opener against Nevada at 3:30 (TV-CBS) at Beaver Stadium.
“He (Grunkemeyer) was just a little bit more consistent from the beginning of camp to the end,” he said. “I say it’s only for Week One because it was close. We’re excited about both of those guys. Both of those guys have shown some flashes.”
The 6-2, 212-pound Grunkemeyer, a redshirt freshman, played in one game last season against SMU in the first round of the College Football Playoff and completed 1-of-2 passes for 9 yards. He’s a former four-star prospect from Lew
