Drivers have been urged to be aware of one little-known rule which could set you back up to £2,500.
Getting a lift with mates is something many Brits will be familiar with, however, insurance experts have warned it is this action which could get you in trouble with the law.
Specialists at tiger.co.uk said drivers could not only face a hefty fine but could even have their insurance voided if they are discovered to be charging people for lifts.
While this could seem like a harmless act, to companies they could consider this to be operating as an unlicensed taxi, which is not usually covered in standard policies.

There is even a clear law on the matter, as the Public Passenger Vehicle Act 1981 writes passenger
