As the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation continues to address some of the most treacherous roads around Western Pennsylvania, the agency has released designs for its Tarrtown Road Slide project, located just north of Kittanning, the seat of Armstrong County.
PennDOT is focusing on two sections of Tarrtown Road in East Franklin that are a short distance apart, each winding between a steep hill on one side and the Allegheny River on the other.
The existing roadway and slope in those areas are “deteriorating and stability is compromised,” according to a presentation PennDOT published online.
During the project, expected to be completed in 2027, workers will stabilize the slopes by inserting several soil nails, or massive metal bars, into the bedrock that will be 34 feet in length a
