COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — An Iowa State Patrol Trooper initiated a traffic stop on Wednesday near the 77-mile marker on Interstate 29, leading to a fatal shooting involving law enforcement. Investigators say Michael Broyles, 48, of Battlefield, Missouri, fled the scene after brandishing a firearm. A pursuit ensued, involving multiple agencies including the Iowa State Patrol, the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Council Bluffs Police Department. Broyles reportedly exited his vehicle and fired at officers, who returned fire and struck him. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, where he was pronounced dead.
