MACON, Ga. — Mayor Lester Miller announced on Thursday that he is making efforts to lower property taxes in Macon for people 65 and older, but it's not set in stone yet.
According to a media release, Miller says he is recommending the commission pass a resolution asking Central Georgia's state legislators pass a law effectively lowering property taxes for seniors.
The property tax exemptions would apply to taxes paid both to the Macon-Bibb County Consolidated Government and the Bibb County School District, according to the release.
This request would increase the homestead exemption for seniors. Currently, all Georgia homeowners can claim a $7,000 homestead exemption, taking $7,000 off the taxable value of their home.
