LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The youngest learners in JCPS started their school year on Thursday.

Nearly 2,000 kids aged three through five years old entered 132 classrooms across 27 early childhood locations.

Kentucky’s preschool program is tuition-free, income-based and includes students who have an individualized education plan, or IEP.

At George Unseld Early Childhood Learning, School officials have noticed a significant increase in the number of kids whose first language is not English.

Last year, students there spoke 19 different languages, and 68 percent of the children spoke a language other than English at home.

“We have children from three years old to five years old, and some are typical, and some are not,” said preschool teacher Laila Talibdin. “Every child learns differently,
